The Terminated Merchant File (TMF File)

The MATCH File is a database file, previously and most commonly known as the Terminated Merchant File "TMF." It is maintained by MasterCard International and is the way by which MasterCard and Visa acquiring banks identify merchants, and the principals, which have been terminated for specific reasons.

Acquiring banks use the MATCH File / TMF database to list ( maintained by MasterCard International ) to allow them to identify merchants, and the principals, which have been terminated from processing MasterCard and Visa for various reasons .

All Acquiring Banks / Credit Card processors must query the MATCH file to determine whether your company, or its owners/principals, have been terminated previously.

According to the rules; if a bank/processor has listed your business or your name, that does not mean you are prohibited from obtaining credit card processing in the future. Unfortunately that does not stop many banks from declining you anyway!

If you are listed on TMF we advise you to carefully read your processing agreement and understand the circumstances under which your merchant account may be terminated. Sometimes your bank will consider removing your listing however there are certain instances in which that listing is required on the same day as the notification under the rules:

  • The merchant has been convicted of credit card fraud
  • The merchant processes sales that were not authorized by cardholders
  • The merchant aggregated sales from multiple businesses.
  • The acquirer has received an excessive number of chargebacks.
  • Visa or Mastercard Issuers have reported the merchant as having excessive fraudulent transactions.
  • The merchant has breaches their Merchant agreement with the Acquiring Bank.

The TMF listing will include the business name as well as the name and identification of the business owners/principals. A TMF listing is a very serious matter but it needed be the end of the line. Perpetual Payments assist you in reducing consumer disputes, chargebacks and fraud so that history needn't repeat itself!
