Address Verification System (also known as Address Verification Service).
A fraud-prevention system that matches the address information provided by the consumer for card-not-present credit/debit card transactions with the address information kept on record by the card issuers.
Address Verification Services (AVS) is now in place for the protection of CNP transactions. The service enables Merchants to reduce fraud losses through the verification of cardholder billing address data. The address data is sent through to the Issuer with the authorisation request and is checked against their database. Various responses are returned such as ‘address matched', ‘postcode not matched'. These responses are incorporated in the call-back, the email confirmation and the Merchant Management System. Based on this response the Merchant can make the decision to ship the goods or not.
